The Olivetti M40 was designed between 1929 and 1930 by Camillo Olivetti to replace the Olivetti M20.
Despite being launched during the years of Great Depression, the M40 was appreciated for its quality, writing speed and lightness of touch of the keyboard (QZERTY type, common on most Italian typewriters at the time).
Aside from the writing keys, the keyboard is completed with a spacebar, 2 capital buttons, one button to lock the capital letters, a backspace and two keys to change the tape color.
