Maserati “Quattroporte”, Italdesign, 1979
Designed by the Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign and known among the enthusiasts as Quattroporte 330 (the factory name for the project), the 1976 Quattroporte marked the coming back of Maserati on the luxury car market, which in the Sixties had already seen the Modenese firm as the almost exclusive protagonist. The front of the car is characterized by the classic, protruding chrome grille in which two rectangular headlights appear. This unusual combination, imposed for reasons of production cost, would mark the fenders of Maseratis from then on. The interior, on the other hand, featured luxurious trim with leather or velvet.
The car had its best sale results when fitted with the 4.9-liter engine, and the Royale version, particularly luxurious and with many accessories, was appreciated by heads of State and Government, as the Italian President Sandro Pertini.
Fun fact: The Maserati Quattroporte became synonymous with style and elegance to the extent that it appeared in many films of the 1980s: this car was chosen by Sylvester Stallone as the car for Rocky Balboa in Rocky III (1982), and David Cronenberg used it in two films, The Fly (1982) and The Dead Zone (1983).
